Nigerian Air Force helicopter blade kills personnel (Tips to avoid Helicopter Rotor accident)

A blade of the (NAF) helicopter has killed an aircraftman in Bama, Borno State.

It is reported that Aircraftman (ACM) Umaru Abdul Ganimu was part of the NAF team actively engaged in counter-insurgency operation in the North East.

The incident occurred in Bama in Borno state on Saturday 6th April, 2019.

Umar was passing through the side of the functioning rotor when the blade chopped off his head.

The aircraft was recovered and taken back to the airbase without any damage on tail rotor.

He has since been buried according to the Islamic rites at the Maimalari Military Cemetery in Maiduguri after the family members were duly informed.

TIPS TO AVOID HELICOPTER ROTOR ACCIDENT

Helicopters can land just about anywhere. Landing on sloped ground will cause the rotor system to be much closer to the ground on the up slope side. Rotor blades can also flap up or down depending on winds and pitch.

Helicopter blades are very flexible (and those that aren’t have engineered “feathering” hinges built into them to replicate the flexibility). As the blades spin down, they have less centrifugal force on them, and they begin to droop they create an impressive downwash that the action to take is to duck. They can easily droop enough to take a head off.

Also, when you exit off the back make sure you turn right because if you turn left you endanger yourself by walking into the rear rotor which is equally deadly.
